Genius hour reflection

Genius hour helped me learn how to speak to an audience about my passion and my personal topic.

If somebody said that genius hour was just free time I would say that genius hour is not just free time. In genius hour, you research and make a presentation about your passion. You rehearse and have fun. For example, people did the history of lego, the art of Thailand, how to design and make your own clothes, DIY candy, DIY art using crayons! All of these topics were in our class and we chose them ourselves.

The most difficult part about genius hour was finding good information about the thai jewelry because most of the time when I typed that up, jewelry for selling was on websites.

I thing that I enjoyed the most was looking at the jewelry that Ms.Lim gave me and researching about the Makara(famous thai sculpture).

If I could do genius hour again, then I would either do these four topics:
  • How to make glass art
  • Create a movie with pictures of animals I've seen
  • Write a story with a video of the elements needed to make a movie
  • How to croquet
If a student was just starting genius hour, my advice for them would be to speak in a clear and loud voice so that the audience sitting at the back can hear you. Also don't write all of the things that you are going to say on the slide. Instead put bullet points and explain those points. Practice at home so that those bullet points can be said well with a good explanation. This will get you to have a good presentation.

Genius hour is majestic and fun. This is where you choose your own topic and research by yourself about it. It is self-directed learning. I chose the art of Thailand and it was awesome! If you haven't done genius hour then try it as there will be no more reminders on doing it as this is my last genius hour post.

Genius hour #9

Today I researched about the Thailand antique jewelry and Ms.Lim showed me some examples that are about 80 to 90 year old(jewelry) given to her by her grandmother.

I am very happy about how close I am to finishing.

My next steps are to practice presenting my presentation on someone.

Genius hour #8

Today I researched about the modern jewelry in Thailand and what the elephants represent on the modern jewelry necklace.

My problem is that I have a lot to do and so little time to finish it that I might have to do some at home.

My next steps are to write about the antique jewelry of which surprisingly Ms.Lim has some antique jewelry that she would like to share with me.

Genies hour #6

What I did this week was research on the ancient jewelry. I also researched about the textiles.

My next steps are to write about the modern jewelry, makara, and the clothing.

I think that I'm going to be ready next week or next to next week.

Genius hour

This week I worked with Mrs. McGuire(Catherine's mom) and I saw a lot of photos and learnt a lot about the ceramics, fabric, jewelry, and Buddhist sculptures.

The sources that I have used so far are the laptop and Ms.McGuire.

I have analyzed my resources and double checked to see if it is true.

A challenge that I have encountered is having a topic too broad but now I have narrowed it down.

My next step will be to research and write down the stories of the Makara(Sculpture) and the walking Buddha. I will also write down the story of the spirits and fabric/clothing.

Genius hour 4th blog post

This week I have researched a little bit more on my topic and I have edited/added a few things to my presentation. I have added a few slides.

My new skill that I have learnt today is choosing which text is suitable for my project and which text is false or unhelpful.

My next step will be to research some more about the three different type of dances in Thailand and to add my new information to my slide show.

Genius hour

I have researched about the art that was done in the 1800's and 1900's. I have researched on the painters/artists and how the paintings that were made looked. I noticed that most of them were make from oil paints.

One interesting or surprising thing that I learnt was that most of the famous paintings were done a long time ago not right now. I think that the oil paints help the paintings.

Something that changed my topic a little was how a really long time ago when paintings were made out of mud was not my kind of thing so I made my topic a little more modern.

One new resource is an expert person who I am going to interact with and I am still using the laptop. I have used more websites.

My next step will be to talk with my expert person and research a little more as well as continue with the google presentation.
