Genius hour reflection

Genius hour helped me learn how to speak to an audience about my passion and my personal topic.

If somebody said that genius hour was just free time I would say that genius hour is not just free time. In genius hour, you research and make a presentation about your passion. You rehearse and have fun. For example, people did the history of lego, the art of Thailand, how to design and make your own clothes, DIY candy, DIY art using crayons! All of these topics were in our class and we chose them ourselves.

The most difficult part about genius hour was finding good information about the thai jewelry because most of the time when I typed that up, jewelry for selling was on websites.

I thing that I enjoyed the most was looking at the jewelry that Ms.Lim gave me and researching about the Makara(famous thai sculpture).

If I could do genius hour again, then I would either do these four topics:
  • How to make glass art
  • Create a movie with pictures of animals I've seen
  • Write a story with a video of the elements needed to make a movie
  • How to croquet
If a student was just starting genius hour, my advice for them would be to speak in a clear and loud voice so that the audience sitting at the back can hear you. Also don't write all of the things that you are going to say on the slide. Instead put bullet points and explain those points. Practice at home so that those bullet points can be said well with a good explanation. This will get you to have a good presentation.

Genius hour is majestic and fun. This is where you choose your own topic and research by yourself about it. It is self-directed learning. I chose the art of Thailand and it was awesome! If you haven't done genius hour then try it as there will be no more reminders on doing it as this is my last genius hour post.

Genius hour presentation

Research based argument essay - It is our choice on whether we want to drink chocolate milk or not

It’s your choice

Chocolate milk has not been a great significance in my life. I like the taste but I’m not one of those people who drink it everyday. However, if I were to choose between keeping chocolate milk on our school menu or erasing it from our school menu, I would choose to keep it because it is our choice on whether we want to drink it at school or not. We have an SAS card to buy things, and we have the power of our card to buy chocolate milk or not. I will be writing about the goods of chocolate milk, the bads of chocolate milk, and how it is our choice to buy chocolate milk or not.

Do you drink chocolate milk everyday? Well, if you do you're in for a little bit of  luck. Chocolate milk is pretty healthy for you but don’t drink it every day! Drink it about twice or thrice a week and vala! That is your tiny bit of advice and your tiny bit of luck(don’t stop drinking it forever!). Here are some examples on how good it is for you. Firstly, chocolate milk has good nutrients, or as  Ms.Dobbins(nutritionist) puts it, “the fact is, that chocolate and other flavoured milks have the same 9 essential nutrients as white milk.” I completely agree and I think that chocolate milk has good nutrients. This shows that there are the same essential nutrients as white milk and there is no difference between the different milks in nutrients. Wikipedia states that there is about 11% of calcium in chocolate milk, and in white milk there is about 12% of calcium in white milk. I now know that you don’t need to worry about the calcium. No worries about your health. I see that there is almost the same amount of calcium in chocolate milk compared to white milk so maybe it doesn’t really matter on health. Some people disagree saying that there is a very small percentage of nutrients in chocolate milk. I challenge this. I don’t think that there is a small percentage of nutrients in chocolate milk and that there is plenty of nutrients as my information above shows that there are loads of nutrients. Drinking the milk, still, in all of my facts above, my facts state that there is way more sugar and calories than vitamins.

Do you like chocolate milk? Do you love drinking it? Do you drink it every day? Well let me drizzle(not rain) on your parade. Chocolate milk is bad, bad, bad, sometimes! It adds extra sugar and calories! How bad is that? Well like I said earlier, don’t stop drinking it forever, just don’t drink it every day and you’ll be fine but here’s a few examples on how bad it is.  In SAS’s chocolate milk we have 16 grams of sugar. Many children drink about 10 - 15 cartons of chocolate milk each week(by Chloe Baker - Australian investigator newscast reporter). According to my calculations this means that the children consume about 160 - 240 grams of sugar each week. This shows that there is way too much unnecessary sugar kids are getting each week. In addition there are 83 calories in a carton of chocolate milk, states the website Cola vs. Chocolate milk . This shows that chocolate milk has way too much sugar and is pretty unhealthy. This also shows that chocolate milk has a lot of calories that we should not consume. Chocolate milk has so very many calories, this tell me that chocolate milk is bad for you to drink. Critics argue that chocolate milk’s flavour is getting their kids to drink milk and it might have more vitamins than sugar and calories. While it might be true that there are more vitamins and better chance of kids

Are you sort of neutral after reading both of my paragraphs above. Well, not to worry, I completely agree and I think that chocolate milk is good and bad and it is your choice on whether you want to buy it or not. “Chocolate milk works as a treat at home.” (part of quote) quoted by the Renegade lunch lady. When I hear this phrase I think about how it’s our choice to have it as a treat at home, or to have it daily at school. This is makes me understand that it is our choice on whether to have it or not. westerndairyassociation says that chocolate milk is more than just flavour, it has nutrients, and myths about chocolate milk being unhealthy have triggered emotions. If it truly does have good nutrients and some rumours about it being unhealthy for you that are false and it is going around, maybe it is our choice to believe the rumours and not drink it or drink it feeling that it is healthy. I see that it is our choice on whether we want to drink it or not, if we think it has lots of nutrition or not. If we think it has too much sugar or not. It’s easy to think that chocolate milk is very bad or very good for your health but when you look at the facts on this paragraph you see that it is your choice to believe chocolate milk is bad or good for your health, whether you want to buy it or not.

Chocolate milk should be kept on our school menu so that we, students, can learn how to use our SAS card correctly and learn what items we are allowed to buy or not. Our parents can set rules on whether we should or shouldn’t buy chocolate milk. Sure chocolate milk can be unhealthy, and sure it can be healthy. May the force of chocolate milk be with you, and drink it if you want to, it’s up to YOU(quoted by Yoda).

Research Based Argument essay

Dolphins are precious to the ocean and to land, they should not be harmed by humans

Do you want to see a dolphin die, after they saved a human? Maybe you don’t really understand, so think about this. Would you save a human drowning in the water? Well, most people would say yes and alert a lifeguard. Now, would you save an intelligent(almost as intelligent as a human) dolphin drowning in the water? Most people would say maybe but what could I do. You could alert a lifeguard - it’s not a human guard and life includes dolphins. Dolphins are very intelligent and don’t deserve to die because of humans. Dolphins are also very kind as I had mentioned earlier, they have saved humans before.

I think that dolphins are one of the most intelligent and kind creatures on earth for three reasons, they are easily trained, they save humans, and lastly their brain size is almost the same size as a human brain. The website Whales and Dolphins brain power says that Kelly, a dolphin kept in a research center for a while, has used fish as a bait and picks up any litter in her tank. As soon as she returns the litter in her tank to her trainer, she is rewarded with a fish. This shows that dolphins are very smart and like humans, sometimes need a bait to do things well. Humans too, sometimes need a bait like in my class we need to read eight genres. Most people wouldn’t read eight genres unless there is a reward, and our reward is to be able to enter the genre party. I think that dolphins are also very brave and kind because of an incident that occurred 10 years ago, Dolphins saving humans states that In 2004 a 10 foot great white shark was known to attack a group of people but a pod of dolphins circled the shark spinning round and round until the great white shark fled. This shows that dolphins are very kind and like people. This also shows that dolphins are very comfortable when close to humans as they have saved many people in many incidents. I think that dolphins are also very smart because they have such intelligent brains that their brains are the closest size and has the most information from all of the animals in their brain compared to a human. Understand dolphins intelligence and brain says that the dolphin brain is the closest size and most intelligent brain compared to the human brain. A dolphin’s brain has 4.2 mass and a humans brain has 7.0 mass. This shows the difference between both the brains. This also shows how intelligent the dolphin brain is.

I think that dolphins also play a huge part in the water and to humans. They play a huge part in the water by being on the top of the food pyramid. They play a huge part to humans by being a part of the U.S military. They play a huge part in the water and to humans by filling up water sources such as oceans and rivers.  Marine trophic pyramid says that dolphins are dolphins play a big part in the food cycle in the ocean by being on the top of the pyramid and being top carnivores. This shows the marine food pyramid and this also shows that dolphins are very important to the food cycle in the ocean. I think that dolphins play a huge part to humans by being on the U.S military. I think that they are confident and brave creatures to be doing this.  Dolphins in the military says that In 1960 dolphins were examined on how they swim to create boats that work that way. After some research they figured out that dolphins were way better than they thought they were. Soon dolphins carried bullets, guns, and other military equipment, as well as guard boats from underwater. This shows that dolphins can do things that humans can do. This also shows that dolphins might be able to do even more human jobs. They might even be better at it than us. Do you thinks so? I think that dolphins are also very useful in another way to humans and water by making rivers more lively and making boat rides more happy as most people would rather go on a boat ride to see dolphins rather than just see fish Where do dolphins live states that dolphins live in various rivers, streams, and oceans. It also says that dolphins live in every ocean besides the Arctic and Antarctic oceans. Dolphins reduce fish in many water resources and make them more lively. Dolphins also fill up streams and other water resources. This shows that dolphins are helping humans to go in the water more often and are helping making thing more enjoyable and happy. This also shows that dolphins make the water more pretty and fun.

I think that some people might argue with me so this is my counterclaim paragraphs for all of the critics who disagree with my essay. I think that critics argue that dolphins may be intelligent but they are of no use for clothes or fabric. While this might be true, dolphins still should be saved because they play a huge part in the water and they have played a huge part to humans. They were in the military! This shows that perhaps this is how we are going to pay back the dolphins for playing a part in the U.S military. We can pay back the dolphins by trying to save them from other humans. I think that some other people would still not be convinced so I think that others might say that dolphins are just like other animals and we don’t need them but I argue, dolphins are different, they are one of the top carnivores and their kindness has saved humans and even huge whales! This shows that dolphins are very nice. You might think that I’m exaggerating on how kind dolphins are but if you read my first paragraph, you would see that dolphins are the closest animals with intelligence to match the human brain.

Now you should definitely realize that dolphins should be here for good and should not be interacted by humans in a bad way. Humans should not misuse their power over animals including Dolphins. Dolphins don’t harm humans, so you don’t harm dolphins, it is despicably unfair. Go dolphins!

Battle of Books(BOB)

Yesterday we had our BOB challenge. My team was Jazlyn, Catherine(Captain), Luca, and me.

I was very excited about doing the battle of books because I had never done it before. I felt slightly nervous because of the weight on whether we would win or loos.

I found that it was very fun and interesting as each of us answered at least one question but most of answered two or three each.

It was amazing, awesome, and majestic!!!!!

Coins for Kathmandu

Our class decided that we would have a quick fundraiser for the people of Nepal. The city of Kathmandu was devastated by two recent earthquakes. Our school is working to raise $50,000 to send to the Lincoln school in Kathmandu to help them help families in the area. The high school service club visited us and we brain stormed different fundraising ideas. In two days just with coins we raised $182.05! Our class is MAJESTIC!!!!!!!

Genre pie challenge

This semester we embarked on another reading journey. We had to read eight different genres over 18 weeks, these were different from semester one's pizza challenge.

I was successful to finish my genre pie first because I think that I used my time wisely and I was organized.

What I did differently from semester one was finish the challenge first by having a goal to finish first as last semester my only goal was to finish.
