Photograph Poem Relationship

I chose to use a picture of a double rainbow to represent the poem, An Admirable Woman by Chrystal Foy.

A theme that I came up for the poem relating to my picture is that, someone who is admirable, has all of the colours in the rainbow and radiates the world through positive actions and beneficial words.

This picture relates to my theme because all of the different colours in the rainbow represent the different characteristics of the admirable woman:

  • The colour red symbolises courage, this represents the admirable woman because according to the poem, she has "courage that one would admire" which means that she is someone who is brave like the colour red.
  • The colour orange symbolises determination which represents the poem because of the line, "who goes the extra mile to help one in need or broken hearted" which requires determination for her to go an extra mile for a selfless cause which is like the colour orange.
  • The colour yellow symbolises joy and happiness like the admirable woman who had, "happiness one would inspire" which means that she was someone who was naturally happy and so she would only the positives in life like the colour yellow.
  • The colour green represents health. The admirable woman was a, "genuinely caring woman" which meant that she cared for how others feeling and if they were all right like the colour green.
  • The colour blue represents intelligence and Chrystal Foy wrote in the poem that her, "intelligence, wisdom and hard work are not surprising" which means that she is naturally smart like the colour blue.
  • Lastly, purple represents dignity just like how the admirable woman, "always keeps her head up high" which means that she is always proud like the colour purple.

I also chose this picture because underneath the bright rainbow, everything glows and is brighter than the world outside of the rainbow. This represents the admirable woman because she helps others and causes others to feel happier which makes the world brighter. There is a faint second rainbow which represents how she is a model to others and how she is setting an example.

Like the double rainbow, she also has double the determination of others to do selfless acts. To do these selfless acts she has "stamina, beauty and courage" which means that she has the determination to work hard so that she has the stamina to keep going. Most people see the negative as well as the positive in every situation, but the admirable women has a mind that is capable of seeing double of what we can. She is able to see the positive in everything but never the negative. As the poem states, "A woman that sees no wrong", meaning that she never sees something as wrong, only as right.

Why are there uneven distributions of oil, natural gasses, copper and geothermal activity around the world?

There are uneven distributions of copper, oil, natural gasses and geothermal activity around the world because when the Pangaea broke up into seven continents, they each carried separate natural resources with them therefore different countries got different natural resources.

Convection caused the tectonic plates to move all around which is how Pangaea broke up. When Pangaea broke up and South America separated, Chile became the world's largest copper producing country because there was an ore deposit forming subduction zone. This meant that when the oceanic crust and the continental crust met, ore rose up to the earth's crust carrying copper inside of the ores. When the tectonic plates crashed into each other, the Andes, the largest mountain chain in the world, formed. Beneath the Andes, a copper porphyry was made. Chile got the longest mountain range which meant that Chile got majority of the mountains found in one place. Chile also has about 500 volcanos which means that many tectonic plates crashed into each other causing more ores to rise and more porphyry's to form. Therefore, when Pangaea divided, the resources were unevenly distributed since Chile got majority or the mountains and volcanos.

When the tectonic plates moved around and Asia broke off from Pangaea, Saudi Arabia was placed in a location that was right above sea where lots of oil lay beneath the seabed. Just like how Russia was placed above a sea where lots of natural gasses lay beneath the seabed. Oil and natural gasses are formed the same way, sometimes natural gasses are formed and sometimes oil is made. They were both made by decomposed matters, mainly of marine microorganisms, which were buried under many layers of rock and sand in an oxygen free environment. Underground, they were exposed to extreme heat and pressure. They underwent a thermal breakdown process where the matter was converted into hydrocarbon, which is natural gas. As for oil, it undergoes one more step, where after it is converted into hydrocarbon, over time, the hydrocarbon gets converted to a liquid which is petrol and migrates up to the surface. Therefore, when Pangaea divided, the resources were unevenly distributed because Saudi Arabia and Russia were located above parts of the sea which are rich in natural gasses and oil.

As for geothermal activity, when the tectonic plates crashed into each other, many subduction zones were created, where the heavier plates slipped under the lighter plates which created deep trenches. The plates moving cause the dense mantle material, which is the interior of the earth, into buoyant magma. This magma rises through the earth's crust and onto the surface. Over millions of years, the magma has created a series of active volcanos which are called the volcanic arc. The volcanic arc makes up the ring of fire. So, when Pangaea broke up, the resources were unevenly distributed because the countries making up the ring of fire around the pacific ocean, have more geothermal activity going on than others since there are more volcanos which create geothermal energy.

In conclusion, there are uneven distributions of copper, oil, natural gasses and geothermal activity around the world because when the Pangaea broke up into seven continents, different countries got different natural resources than others because of their location.

Photograph That Represent Me

This picture was taken by me over winter break in Japan. I chose this picture because it has many elements in it, the mountains, sea and town which all represent me and how I grow up.

The sea represents everlasting change and I am constantly changing every day. My attitude also changes and varies day to day as well as my surroundings. School work and classes also change every day. Every day there is change, from the smallest changes to the biggest ones - like my first day of middle school. That was a huge change for me and still, as I grow, like when I change into high school in the future, I will change. There will always be changes for me as I grow up.

The small buildings represent me moving from country to country and learning about new cultures. I was born in Singapore and lived there for about 5 years but don't really remember my experience. When I moved in India, I learnt a lot about traditional festivals there such as Diwali and Holi. When I moved back to Singapore, I learnt about Chinese New Year and Thanksgiving. As I changed from place to place, and grew older, my level of acceptance increased and my knowledge also increased.

The mountains have been around for centuries and have seen many things. It has gone through many storms and avalanches. As I grow older I see things differently with a new perspective and are becoming more knowledgable. I make more friends and overcome more obstacles - the avalanches and storms as I grow. I have overcome the first day of middle school fright as well as my mile. When I become older, I will have more obstacles to overcome, and will continue to have obstacles throughout my whole life.

These three elements all symbolize my learning, changes and obstacles I encounter as I grow. They explain through my photograph how I have changed and how in the future I will continue to change.
